Denmark Speech Model United Nations

Somalia is a country in Africa which is suffering from famine, low resource, etc.  The Al-Shabbab terrorist group prevents anyone from entering and leaving the country and prevents everyone from entering which prohibits people to help Somalia. Our group represented Denmark and developed the opening address and resolution to deal with the crisis in Somalia. Please do read our speech

Child Soldiers on Sierra Leone "What's going on"

The video was about children in Sierra Leone taken as servants or soldiers at a young age. I felt very emotional when the children found their parents at the end especially the bald African child found his mother after a long period in a day-care center. It's very sad how children from a young age are drug tested to fight. Around 10,000 children are used as tools of war in South Africa.

UN Child Labor in Brazil

Recently in class, we watched a video which really was shocking. 1/2 the population in Brazil are in poverty (7 million children). Child labor is a dangerous job because you can get diseases and illnesses.Children in the world have to work to survive while we go to school and have an education. The children don't really have a choice but to earn money to buy food. I felt very heartbroken when Reinaldo, a 9 year-old boy had to break rocks which makes his hands extremely tired due to the hammering. He has to work since his mother doesn't have enough money to provide the family. Another story that I found shocking was when Leandra da Silva, an eleven year-old girl had to spend night and day picking up cans and bottles in a dump. I was really confused how Leandra's mother didn't want her daughter to have a better life by having an education at the first place.

Comparisons between Countries

Some statistics that I was really shocked was between the five countries was how the people in Japan and Denmark could almost all read and write since they are the wealthiest countries among the rest of the others and how 12.6% of females in Afghanistan could read and write but 43.1% males could read and write which is a huge difference although one of the goals that Afghanistan need to work on is gender equity. Another shocking news that I found was that Denmark had only 0.4 deaths in 100 live births which is very low since the population is 5,529,888, the lowest population among the other countries.

Making a Differene

From the movie called Nobelity, I felt very shocked about the news from Sir Joseph Rotblat when he said that U.S, Britain, China, France, India, Israel, Pakistan, Soviet Union still make nuclear weapons today. Joseph Rotblat signed a letter along with Einstein which was delivered to the U.S president. I don't really understand why people spend trillions of money on nuclear weapons rather than helping out other people in the world. I'm quite amazed in 1991, Jody Williams started her land mine campaign which is ISBL and made a peace treaty to make countries sign to stop making land mines. The organization started from two people which is unbelievable. I think that Jody Williams is making the world a better place by trying to ban landmines. Every year, at least 15-20 thousand people die from landmines. Counties like Mongolia, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Croatia, etc still have stock piles of mines today. She also convinced 1,000 NGO's from 60++ countries to support her foundation. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has." M.Mead. 156 countries took part in the treaty although major countries failed to sign like the U.S,etc. Click here to know more about Jody Williams and her foundation.

That's Jody Williams

The Millenium Development Goals/ Sarah McLachlan's Song

In the year 2000, 189 nations join hands together to help the world by creating goals which will be achieved in the year 2015. More than 50% of the people in the world are suffering from hunger, environmental sustainability, maternal health, child health, lot's more. The development goals are environmental sustainability, poverty, education, global partnership, maternal health, child health, gender equality, and combatting HIV/Aids. To stop this from happening, $100 billion dollars must be donated per year. The emotion that I had from the videos were sad, lucky, heart-broken,etc. The reason why I chose lucky is because I feel grateful to able to have access to education, food, clean water, etc. Some shocking news for me was every around 16,000 mothers die every day. Our group (Esme, Charvi, Andrea and I) decided to discuss about poverty and starvation although it was Charvi's idea. We also chose this because it's the first goal of the millenium development goals. 200 million people are starving in the world which is pretty serious. People can't find jobs to make money to feed themselves, etc. So as a result, our group is doing poverty and starvation.

The theme for Sarah McLachlan's song is about poverty and hunger. This is related to the millenium goals  because poverty and hunger is one of the goals to accomplish by 2015. The message that she is trying to tell us is to donate money to those who are in need. The most important goal that I think is poverty and hunger because if people in the world are struggling to earn $1 a day, they can't even feed themselves and able to have access to clean water, etc. The reason why I chose hunger and poverty as the important goal is because more people die from hunger than HIV/AIDS, every 60 seconds, a child is dying, and almost 1 billion people suffer from hunger. Around 2.5 billion people don't have access to a clean sanitation which bacteria and viruses can pollute clean water. If people drink contaminated water, then most likely, they will have diarrhea. Diarrhea kills 4100 children per 24 hours. 1000 parasitic worms are carried by children who drink contaminated water. To have access to clean water, mostly girls have to search for water and abandon their education. 1/6 of the worlds population doesn't have access to clean water. 4 people die from lack of water every minute over the world which is shocking. This is interlinked with the Millenium Development Goals because poverty and hunger is one of the goals that is very serious.

Lyrics to Sarah McLachlan's Song

World on Fire
Hearts are worn in these dark ages
You're not alone in this story's pages
Night has fallen amongst the living and the dying
And I try to hold it in, yeah I try to hold it in

[Chorus]
The world's on fire and
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
(I try to pull my ship)
I try to bring more
More than I can handle
(Bring it to the table)
Bring what I am able

I watch the heavens and I find a calling
Something I can do to change this moment
Stay close to me while the sky is falling
Don't wanna be left alone, don't wanna be alone

[Chorus]

Hearts break, hearts mend
Love still hurts
Visions clash, planes crash
Still there's talk of
Saving souls, still the cold
Is closing in on us

We part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line on this short run
The more we take, the less we become
A fortune of one that means less for some

Quote of Gandhi

The reason why I chose "There’s enough on this planet for everyone’s needs but not for everyone’s greed" is because not everyone on planet Earth has access to food, clean water, shelter, etc. People should at least share food, water, electricity, etc to other people who are desperate to need them. There is enough for everyone needs but people might waste food, water, electricity, etc. Approximately 10,1237 ton of food is wasted per year. At least 1 billion dollars go to the army but 100 million dollars go to charities which makes a big difference. If everyone shares equally, people should make around $100,000 dollars. If people shared food, people are able to have 3 meals per day without starvation. This quote teaches a lesson for people about saving our resources and caring for people in the world. So make a difference today!http://castle.eiu.edu/wow/classes/fa04/mgpic5.jpg
