In the year 2000, 189 nations join hands together to help the world by creating goals which will be achieved in the year 2015. More than 50% of the people in the world are suffering from hunger, environmental sustainability, maternal health, child health, lot's more. The development goals are environmental sustainability, poverty, education, global partnership, maternal health, child health, gender equality, and combatting HIV/Aids. To stop this from happening, $100 billion dollars must be donated per year. The emotion that I had from the videos were sad, lucky, heart-broken,etc. The reason why I chose lucky is because I feel grateful to able to have access to education, food, clean water, etc. Some shocking news for me was every around 16,000 mothers die every day. Our group (Esme, Charvi, Andrea and I) decided to discuss about poverty and starvation although it was Charvi's idea. We also chose this because it's the first goal of the millenium development goals. 200 million people are starving in the world which is pretty serious. People can't find jobs to make money to feed themselves, etc. So as a result, our group is doing poverty and starvation.
The theme for Sarah McLachlan's song is about poverty and hunger. This is related to the millenium goals because poverty and hunger is one of the goals to accomplish by 2015. The message that she is trying to tell us is to donate money to those who are in need. The most important goal that I think is poverty and hunger because if people in the world are struggling to earn $1 a day, they can't even feed themselves and able to have access to clean water, etc. The reason why I chose hunger and poverty as the important goal is because more people die from hunger than HIV/AIDS, every 60 seconds, a child is dying, and almost 1 billion people suffer from hunger. Around 2.5 billion people don't have access to a clean sanitation which bacteria and viruses can pollute clean water. If people drink contaminated water, then most likely, they will have diarrhea. Diarrhea kills 4100 children per 24 hours. 1000 parasitic worms are carried by children who drink contaminated water. To have access to clean water, mostly girls have to search for water and abandon their education. 1/6 of the worlds population doesn't have access to clean water. 4 people die from lack of water every minute over the world which is shocking. This is interlinked with the Millenium Development Goals because poverty and hunger is one of the goals that is very serious.
Lyrics to Sarah McLachlan's Song
World on Fire
Hearts are worn in these dark ages
You're not alone in this story's pages
Night has fallen amongst the living and the dying
And I try to hold it in, yeah I try to hold it in
[Chorus]
The world's on fire and
It's more than I can handle
I'll tap into the water
(I try to pull my ship)
I try to bring more
More than I can handle
(Bring it to the table)
Bring what I am able
I watch the heavens and I find a calling
Something I can do to change this moment
Stay close to me while the sky is falling
Don't wanna be left alone, don't wanna be alone
[Chorus]
Hearts break, hearts mend
Love still hurts
Visions clash, planes crash
Still there's talk of
Saving souls, still the cold
Is closing in on us
We part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line on this short run
The more we take, the less we become
A fortune of one that means less for some
The reason why I chose "There’s enough on this planet for everyone’s needs but not for everyone’s greed" is because not everyone on planet Earth has access to food, clean water, shelter, etc. People should at least share food, water, electricity, etc to other people who are desperate to need them. There is enough for everyone needs but people might waste food, water, electricity, etc. Approximately 10,1237 ton of food is wasted per year. At least 1 billion dollars go to the army but 100 million dollars go to charities which makes a big difference. If everyone shares equally, people should make around $100,000 dollars. If people shared food, people are able to have 3 meals per day without starvation. This quote teaches a lesson for people about saving our resources and caring for people in the world.
